A Spring Update!

March is a month of transition. We change our clocks, we change seasons and we inevitably change our clothes, shedding layers for fresh new wears. This March marks a particularly significant change for Brass as we transition to a whole new way of thinking about our wardrobes.

When we started Brass 3.5 years ago, we were frustrated with our wardrobes. Years of shopping sales and fast fashion left us with closets full of crap. We knew we needed better options, and we set out to provide women with higher quality clothing with a more reasonable price tag. We didn’t know it at the time, but we’d spend the next 3.5 years talking to women about their wardrobes and the impact they have on our lives.

Through these conversations, we realized women everywhere share many of the same wardrobe issues:

  • Closets filled with tons of random one-off pieces, purchased on impulse from a sale, or emotional shopping, or feeling the need to be “on trend”.
  • Stress getting dressed in the morning, leading us to spend time and energy on figuring out what to wear, and still not feeling great when we walk out the door.
  • Feelings of insecurity, anxiety, and frustration about what is or is not appropriate to wear to work.

These are collective problems women face every single morning and these are the problems we aim to solve. Why? Because our appearance affects our level of confidence. And our confidence affects how we show up in this world. If we can help women worry less about appearance through building a wardrobe they love, we’ll all have more time and energy for things that really matter.

Over the past 3 years, we’ve put this mission to the test in a few ways. Our first step in helping women build a wardrobe was with The Closet Kit - 4 curated, foundational pieces. Then, we did The Edit - a 6 month program that guided women in slow shopping and crafting a personalized foundational wardrobe. After that, we updated The Closet Kit to what it is now - your choice of 3 foundational pieces, plus The Clean Out Bag. In January we started selling Clean Out Bags individually and sold 400 in one week! It showed us that women are ready to work on their wardrobes in a big way.

Throughout these “tests”, we list, we learn, and we adapt. All of this knowledge and experience has led us to develop a system that guides women in building a beautiful, stress-free wardrobe.

The system is made up of 3 categories:

  1. Layers - layering pieces such as perfect tanks, leggings and bodysuits. (Launching late Summer!)
  2. Foundations - staple pieces that you wear over and over again (think: Ponte Pants).
  3. Editions - limited pieces that keep your wardrobe feeling current (think: The Romper and The Everyday Sweater)

We see these as the 3 essential categories for your wardrobe. Starting in late March, you’ll see us talking about this system and these categories on our website, in emails and in our Instagram feed and stories. As we add new pieces to each category, we’ll explain its role in your wardrobe and the intention behind why we made it.

In April, we’ll launch 6 new foundations. We’re so excited about these pieces because they’re the first designs from our new designer. We’ve spent a lot of time working on these pieces to get them right. We can’t wait to share more about this new product and introduce you to our new designer in a future newsletter.

Between now and then, we’ve put together a fun way to refresh your Spring wardrobe with purpose. The Duos will pair together two of our best-selling pieces, each designed with a specific woman in mind. Keep an eye out for these sets to launch this week!

And, as always, thank you for your continued support. Without such a smart, dedicated group of women providing us with feedback, we’d never be where we are today. We look forward to working hard to constantly improve our product and experience for you, our best girls.

Xx Katie and Jay
